Terminologies and Classification Systems in Medicine

The field of international medical terminology is complex. A preliminary study funded by the Federal Ministry of Health involving many stakeholders from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (D-A-CH) examined the use status in German-speaking countries using selected scenarios (patient short files, medication documentation, electronic reporting system for infection protection). Recommendations on the need for and selection of international terminologies as well as for possible cooperation between German-speaking countries were developed in several expert workshops.

The book's first part publishes the recommendations developed in the project, in which the participating experts from German-speaking countries advocate the use of internationally standardized terminologies (e.g., LOINC or SNOMED CT) to ensure an international exchange of information. The recommendations make it particularly clear that detailed solutions can only be approached step by step and that a national strategy is urgently needed.

In the second part of this anthology, experts from science, associations, and industry provide the most important technical background information on individual topics and terminology systems, for example, on ICD-11, SNOMED CT, LOINC, and identifiers in the pharmaceutical sector, on terminology servers and semantic management, metadata, acceptance factors, and definitions, as well as on the future significance of terminology systems in research and healthcare. The book thus offers an up-to-date survey of terminologies and classification systems in medicine in German-speaking countries.
