Biomaterial Banks - Quality Assurance Checklist

Biobanks are an internationally sought-after key resource for research into the complex molecular mechanisms of the pathophysiology of diseases with hereditary components. In order to ensure that these valuable collections of material can be used scientifically in the long term, the TMF has developed general guidelines for the organization and quality assurance for the establishment and operation of biobanks as part of an extensive biobank project.

Following the publication of the legal report on the establishment and operation of biobanks in 2006, the fifth volume of the TMF publication series now provides the research community with an implementation aid that supports users both in the establishment of a new quality management system and in the adaptation of an existing one.

The handout is based on a review of the demands formulated in legal texts, guidelines, or scientific papers. An annotated list of items covers the relevant questions for establishing and evaluating a biobank's quality management system, for each of which the authors propose a standard procedure or solution.

The structure of the item list logically follows the path of the sample from collection to storage and transfer. With the final checklist, the user can check in a structured manner whether all relevant demands for the quality assurance of their biobank have been observed.
